[Top 5] Elden Ring Best Erdtree Tank Builds

You can hit me, but you can't hurt me

Can You Take a Hit? Well, Can Ya?

Elden Ring is a soulslike game, and we often hear it called, 'Dark Souls 4'. I'm definitely not against the title, although I like gothic Skyrim equally well, but that also means that when we load up the game we should expect to get murdered often by some of the hardest bosses that can be found in the video game world today. In fact we see bosses that can deliver hits hard enough to wipe out players in one hit even in the base game, I'm thinking about you Commander N'iall, Radahn, Malenia, and others.

The whole point of souls games is to be able to fight against some of the toughest enemies in the game, and even the Dark Souls 3 boss, the Nameless King, has trouble stacking up against some of the tougher new big bads out there. With all that said, the souls players are some of the most innovative players there are, and with that comes the return of the tank builds, made to take on even Malenia and Radahn, Consort of Miquella while giving back shocking amounts of damage. We also see plenty of new armor in the DLC, ranging from the Rakshasa and Dancer's sets, to the heavy armor of Solitude which is one of the heaviest and the toughest new armors in the game. With the new talismans that even boost defense when the player is overburdened. With all the new options, the options are open to make a build that can be touched, just not hurt; talk about thick skin.

Playing a Tank Build

Playing a tank isn't easy, and true to it being an open world RPG, we do see a lot of different ways to approach the tank builds. Some players are big on choosing the best armor and buffs for the build, while other players showcase their 99 Vigor builds which meet the max you can put into your stats. However they choose to go about it, there are plenty of methods for being able to take heavy hits.

Tanks aren't just about taking hits though. One of the biggest benefits to playing a tank is that they are better at being able to trade blows. In fact, we can find some of the strongest tank showcases in Elden Ring where players have intentionally taken hits from bosses like Rellana only to come back from near death and lay her low while ending the fight at full health. This comes from the ability to restore health, in much the same way we saw in Bloodborne, but also sitting at such a high poise that even the bosses can't knock the player from their feet.

Thanks to the Talisman of Lord's Bestowal and the Bull-Goat's Talisman we see the ability to boost our poise upwards of 89%, which is insane when you consider that some of the heaviest armors in the game offer us anywhere from 72-96 poise. When you consider that you really only need 51 Poise to be able to trade hits effectively, that means you just aren't moving.

Picking the Top 5 Tanks

Tanks are a pretty standard build that are structured around heavy armor and the ability to take blows while dishing them back just as hard, or harder. For the most part that makes most tanks a kind of heavy paladin, or a heavy sword and board type build that focuses on the use of heavy shields, spears, and weapons that make the build worth taking all those hits from the bosses. The Shadow of the Erdtree gave us a lot of great new gear for our tanks, and a few new consumables that just make it that much easier to crank the damage high, while taking as little as possible. Or in the case of the 99 Vigor build, just not caring if you take hits because the enemy always ends up going down first.

5. The Holy Tank

Image

By the grace of god, let me tank him

What is The Holy Tank

Holy builds were an underwhelming build in the base game, since most of the bosses had some kind of resistance to the holy damage itself. This ended up putting those builds as a general underdog and players turned towards other ways to play instead. There's still a few niche holy builds, but Shadow of the Erdtree suddenly gave us a part of the game where holy damage was actually strong against enemies and the new bosses.

This gave us a huge rise to the holy builds again and we saw paladins and tanks get an upgrade. Part of this was thanks to the Devonia Devastator build by Fextralife, but we also saw some new aspects of the crucible talismans and armor that gave us a chance to really up the ante with a take on a tank version of an arcangel style build. The Crucible armor set has always been one of the highest buffs that we can use for the incantations and skills that it charges up.Honestly, the only reason this comes in at number five is because holy damage is still hit or miss outside the DLC. This is a build that can tank just about anything, but there is always going to be that problem, sadly.

Playing The Holy Tank Pros and Cons

  • This build is great in the DLC, because holy damage shreds bosses.
  • Holy damage tends to be on the weaker side of damage effects in the main game, so this build may struggle somewhat against bosses resistant or immune to holy damage
  • This build is excellent at trading blows and being adapted for other uses like paladin builds, since it effectively functions as a barbarian paladin hybrid.

Weapon Loadout

1. Black Steel Greathammer

  • Requirements: 25 Strength, 11 Dexterity, 17 Faith

The Black Steel Greathammer is one of the harder hitting new weapons in the DLC and it can be given a sacred affinity and an ash of war. It can also be enchanted with sacred enchantment incantations which give it an extra wallop and allow you to pick more versatile ashes of war. It also can be used for pairing with some gnarly crucible spell damage, which makes this one of the hardest hitting options that we have for this as a tank build.

2. Marika's Hammer

  • Requirements: 20 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 19 Faith

Marika's Hammer is just one of the best holy weapons in the game and it hits really hard. We use it for the sheer holy damage that it can inflict on top of the fact that it lets the player do a significant amount of damage.

3. Golden Greatshield

  • Requirements: 24 Strength

We chose the Golden Greatshield for the fact that it fits the theme, and it has no skill which means that you can always keep it on hand and not interfere with the special skills of the weapon in your primary hand. Of course that also means that it can be given an ash of war as well, which makes it all the more versatile for this build.

4. Spear with Holy Ash of War

  • Requirements: N/A

Spears are the best thing to pair with any large shield because we can guard and thrust at the same time. For this build we really want a spear that we can give a holy ash of war to, or we want something that we can give an Aspect of the Crucible ash of war to, particularly Aspect of the Crucible: Wings. This gives us range and the ability to fly across the battlefield quickly even if the player is over-burdened by a heavy equip load.

5. Erdtree Seal

  • Requirements: 40 Faith

Whenever it comes to holy builds, we can figure that we're going to crank the faith stat pretty high. Since we're doing just that in the Holy Tank, it never hurts to have the Erdtree seal which has the best incantation sorcery scaling in the game overall for seals.

4. Ultimate HP build

Image
image
The HP is infinite, take your time

What is the Ultimate HP Build

The Ultimate HP build is a tank build that focuses on literally that, the ultimate HP. Originally that meant maxing out vigor and using some consumables for temporary buffs while relying on talismans like Erdtree's Favor and Crimson Amber talisman to round us out. Now those talismans got new upgrades in the DLC with an additional +3, and we get a helm that lets us increase our stamina, hp, and equip load, making tanks even more viable.

This is also the build with so much health that we can focus more on an aggressive playstyle instead of worrying on armor and other tanky problems, so we get to showcase a somewhat vampiric skill in the hand-to-hand ash of war category called lifesteal fist. Not only do we have an insane health bar, but we get to frustrate our enemies by stealing their HP to recover the damage that they dealt.

That all being said, the beauty of the 99 vigor build is that it allows the player to play almost any style that they want to try out. Keep in mind that every build on this list can very quickly benefit from 99 vigor, so this just makes it for a fun base at number 4.

Playing the Ultima HP build Pros and Cons

  • You have to put 99 points into stamina. Depending how you utilize the build, this is one of the highest level builds to get functioning stats in the DLC and base game.
  • This build will tank anything, thanks to the large health bar, giving the player time to deliver their own counter attacks.
  • This build can be utilized in a variety of ways, and even blended with other builds on the list.
  • Having enough HP is never a bad thing, but it can over-clutter the items and limit the build somewhat.

Weapon Loadout

1. Pata

  • Requirements: 11 Strength, 15 Dexterity

The Pata is the weapon that I chose for this build because it has one of the longest ranges for any fist weapon and it scales decently with dexterity, which makes this good for a high dex and intelligence build. It can also be enchanted with Scholar's Armament and rubbed with Magic Grease to exponentially increase the magic damage that this build can do. We quickly see damage in the neighborhood of 2k, which is enough to one-shot most pvp players and take out even the tougher bosses with such a large life bar to work with.

  • Ash of War: Lifesteal fist

2. Staff of the Great Beyond

  • Requirements: 7 Strength, 25 Faith, 25 Intelligence

The only reason for the Staff of the Great Beyond is because this build uses both incantations and sorceries. We like it for this reason and it serves the purpose of keeping our equip load fairly streamlined which is good in a build that likes to get up close and personal.

Gear Loadout

Helms

  • Fire Knight Helm- Boosts HP by 2%, Stamina by 5%, and equip load by 4%

Armor

  • Twinned Armor- Armor with the highest vitality in the game

  • Royal Remains Gauntlets- Slowly recovers health when HP is reduced
  • Rakshasa Gauntlets- Increases damage dealt and received by 2%

Greaves

  • Twinned Greaves- Armor with the highest vitality in the game
  • Royal Remains Gauntlets- Slowly recovers health when HP is reduced
  • Rakshasa Greaves- Increases damage dealt and received by 2%

Talismans

  • Shard of Alexander Talisman- Boosts damage of skills by 15%
  • Dagger Talisman- Increases critical damage by 17%
  • Pearl Shield Talisman- Boosts all non-physical damage negation while guarding
  • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman- Reduce physical damage by 20%
  • Two-Headed Turtle Talisman- Boosts stamina recovery by 22.2%
  • Erdtree's Favor Talisman +2- Raises maximum hp by 4%, stamina by 10%, and equip load by 8%
  • Crimson Amber Talisman +3- Greatly increases maximum HP

Spells

  • Golden Vow- Increases damage dealt by 15% and reduces damage received by 10%
  • Black Flame's Protection- greatly reduces physical damage taken but also limits restoration from flasks.
  • Scholar's Armament- Enchants the weapon in the right hand with magical damage.
  • Bestial Vitality- Increases HP over time
  • Barrier Spells- These spells provide defensive buffs based on different types of damages received.

Stats

  • 99 Vigor
  • 25-40 Mind
  • 30-40 Endurance
  • 20-80 Strength
  • 50-80 Dexterity
  • 50-80 Intelligence

3. Fingerprint Hoplite 'Let Me Tank Him'

Image
image
Did you hit me?

What is a Fingerprint Hoplite

The DLC brought us some great stuff and that included more shields, talismans, and extra gear. The 'Let Me Tank Him' build hit Youtube and Reddit by storm, among other things after people began to vent about how difficult the new DLC had ended up being. 'Let Me Tank Him' was already a big deal from the main game, but it came back fresh and from it we have the Fingerprint Hoplite emerge.

Builds that posted this boosted in their video captions that this build could tank 100% damage taken, even from the new Radahn himself. They weren't lying either, because they showcase taking on some of the toughest bosses in the DLC, I'm looking at you Golden Hippo, without even flinching. They even went so far as to call it the 'all-hit' challenge instead of the 'no-hit' challenge. However you go about it, the damage tanked was impressive and we saw some excellent gameplay that they gave to us in the form of the Fingerprint shield builds.

Playing the Fingerprint Hoplite Pros and Cons

  • This build has some of the absolute best damage negation of any tank build, and is capable of taking hits from anything.
  • This build leaves the weapon choice open for the players, which makes it fun to experiment a bit and pick something that suits your playstyle, but still giving you access to the shield.
  • This is one of the sturdiest builds, and can trade blows with even the heaviest of bosses.
  • Weapon choice options allows this build to adapt to almost any situation and use whatever it needs for any occasion.

Weapon Loadout

1.Fingerprint Stone Shield

  • Requirements: 48 Strength

The Fingerprint Stone Shield is one of the toughest shields in the game and it has a whopping 100 on physical damage defense. We can buff that up even higher, which ends up combining with the immutable shield incantation to create a defense that can all but stop 100% of damage from enemies trying to hit you. So long as you can hold the guard, this will end up being a build that can take on DLC and main bosses with barely a scratch to the lifepoints.

2. Vyke's War Spear

  • Requirements: 16 Strength, 20 Dexterity, 18 Faith

This spear is great because it can be used while blocking with the shield, which meets the hoplite requirement. It also does a lot of poise damage and can inflict a great deal of madness buildup which can be effective in other strategies.

3. Frenzied Flame Seal

  • Requirements: N/A

This is one of the easiest seals to use with any build and low weight requirement, although the Dragon Communion seal can be used as well. Any seal works for this build, but it really depends on the player.

Gear Loadout

Helms

  • Verdigris Helm- The primary helm for this build and one of the better heavy armors in the game
  • Bull-Goat Helm- The helm of the tankiest armor in the game, meant for heavy damage trades and high poise

Armor

  • Verdigris Armor- The primary armor for this build and one of the better heavy armors in the game
  • Bull-Goat Armor- The armor of the tankiest armor in the game, meant for heavy damage trades and high poise

Gauntlets

  • Verdigris Gauntlets- Heavy armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Bull-Goat Gauntlets- The gauntlets of the tankiest armor in the game, meant for heavy damage trades and high poise

Greaves

  • Verdigris Greaves- The primary greaves for this build and one of the better heavy armors in the game
  • Bull-Goat Greaves- The greaves of the tankiest armor in the game, meant for heavy damage trades and high poise

Extra Essentials

Talismans

  • Greatshield Talisman- Boosts guarding ability significantly
  • Pearl Shield Talisman- Boosts all non-physical damage negation while guarding
  • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman- Reduce physical damage by 20%
  • Two-Headed Turtle Talisman- Boosts stamina recovery by 22.2%
  • Great-Jar's Arsenal Charm- Vastly increases equip load
  • Verdigris Discus- Increases defense when overburdened
  • Erdtree's Favor- Boosts hp as well as equip load and stamina

Spells

  • Immutable Shield- this spell allows the shield to absorb most non-physical damage for 30 seconds
  • Golden Vow- increases damage dealt by 15% and damage negation by 10%
  • Black Flame's Protection- increases damage negation by 20% but reduces recovery from flasks

Stats

  • 50-99 Vigor
  • 25-35 Mind
  • 50-65 Endurance
  • 30-80 Strength
  • 30-80 Dexterity
  • 9-25 Intelligence
  • 25-65 Faith
  • 12-60 Arcane

2. Giant-Crusher Guard

Image
image
Big stick is also big shield

What is Giant-Crusher Guard

We see a lot of tank builds that rely on the sword and board skill, which makes it pretty universally common for the 'Let Me Tank Him' builds. They're reliable, but they're not quite as fun. The Giant-Crusher build goes another direction and caters to another type of player, and one that we know well, the Barbarian.

Giant-Crusher is built around a specific weapon in the game, the massive Greathammer we see by that name. The hammer requires 60 strength just to wield it, but it has fantastic scaling and a ridiculously high guard counter on physical and non-physical damage. This weapon can tank hits with a guard, and then go into several abilities that utilize a charged counter attack. The resulting damage starts around 3K and skyrockets depending on just how the build is tweaked.

Playing the Giant-Crusher Pros and Cons

  • The Giant-Crusher is a powerful weapon, and it is one of the best faith scaling weapons in the game
  • This build can have multiple Giant-Crushers which makes it either a Barbarian or a Berserker class, which means talismans can be swapped around to suit the needs.
  • This is a skill based build and does require some technical gameplay that focuses on guard counters. It still has been shown to tank every boss in the game, even final bosses in the DLC.
  • This build can deal upwards of 4k-7k damage easily, consistently, and is capable of dealing staggering amounts as an aggressive counter attack barbarian build

Weapon Loadout

1.Giant-Crusher (x2)

  • Requirements: 60 Strength

This is one of the hardest hitting, heaviest, and best scaling weapons in the Elden Ring game. It has excellent strength scaling and it can be used to deal quite a bit of damage during a boss fight. We saw the original showcase for this build in the Best Tanky build without a shield showcase by Casual GG, where he uses Endure and Royal Knight's Resolve, however this build focuses on guard counters and any number of Ashes of War can be used to hype up the more offensive or tactical side of playing this build.

Ashes of War

  • Endure- for the tankiest version of this build
  • Royal Knight's Resolve- This raises counter attack damage exponentially while increasing defense

2.Frenzied Flame Seal

  • Requirements: N/A

Normally I'm actually not a fan of this seal because I just don't like the ending that comes with having it. On the other hand, it gives us the opportunity to only put into faith what we need to put into faith. The seal itself is just there, so really you only need faith for the incantations the player might cast, like Golden Vow, or any of the Erdtree defensive barrier incantations.

3.Dagger of choice

  • Requirements: N/A

We have this for the purpose of Seppuku, which just makes the build that much stronger. Since this is a tank build there will already be a healthy supply of stats in HP, which means that a little early blood-loss isn't going to hurt anybody seriously. I actually like the Main-Gauche as my favorite DLC dagger, but anything will work and there are a few with interesting special stats that may come in handy.

Gear Loadout

Helms

  • Rakshasa Helm- Increases damage dealt and recie
  • Crucible Axe Helm- Enhances Aspect of the Crucible Incantations by 3.5% for a crucible knight option
  • White Mask- Enhances damage when blood loss occurs in the area

  • Bull-Goat Armor- Heavy Armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Verdigris Armor- Heavy Armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Crucible Armor- Enhances Aspect of the Crucible Incantations by 3.5% for a crucible knight option

Gauntlets

  • Rakshasa Gauntlets- Increases damage dealt and received by 2%
  • Verdigris Gauntlets- Heavy Armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Crucible Gauntlets- Enhances Aspect of the Crucible Incantations by 3.5% for a crucible knight option

  • Rakshasa Greaves- Increases damage dealt and received by 2%
  • Verdigris Greaves- Heavy Armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Greaves of Solitude- Heavy Armor with strong defense and Poise
  • Bull-Goat Greaves- one of the heaviest and strongest sets of greaves in the game.
  • Crucible Greaves- Enhances Aspect of the Crucible Incantations by 3.5% for a crucible knight option

Extra Essentials

  • Black Flame's Protection- Increases physical damage negation by 20% but lowers amount recovered by flasks.
  • Barrier of Gold- Increases holy damage negation
  • Bloodflame Blade- Enchants the weapon with bloodflame
  • Vyke's Dragon Bolt- Enchanted the right hand weapon with red dragon lightning

1. Life Gain Hoplite

Image
image
It's soul stealing time

What is a Life Gain Hoplite

Hoplites are the term we use kind of generically for a player that uses a large shield and a spear combo. This lets us guard and perform a variety of thrusting attacks. The Life Gain Hoplite is really just a tank version of a Vampire Knight build, which utilizes the heaviest life gain armor and equipment possible. The DLC gave us a couple new weapons that had some great life abilities, but it also gave us more in the way of Talismans and consumables that upped the game for a heavy tank player.

Thanks to this, we see a lot of benefits coming our way in more health recovery, better base weapons to add for skills, new armor that can buff our damage, and enough poise and defensive stats to really tank the fight to the boss.

Playing the Life Gain Hoplite Pros and Cons

  • This build has crazy defensive stats with the verdigris discus, and high poise with Bull-Goat Talisman and Talisman of Lords Bestowal.
  • The ways to steal HP or gain HP per hit are various enough that this build has a lot of versatility. It can use bleed on most enemies with the spear, an deal more barbarian damage with the butchering knife
  • This is a high stat build, because it can require an even spread to get the most out of its weapons. It may take some refining to get it perfect for the player.
  • Bleed Damage is good on most enemies, and Holy damage is great for the DLC bosses. On top of that, this build can utilize a physical damage via storm in order to fight bosses that are resistant to most things like the Elden Beast.

Weapon Loadout

1. Dagger with Seppuku

  • Requirements: N/A

Just about any dagger works for this as long as we can put the Seppuku ash of war on it. I like the Main-Gauche for being a DLC dagger in a DLC article, but really anything works as long as it fits your preference.

2. Butchering Knife

  • Requirements: 16 Strength, 20 Dexterity.

We like the Butchering Knife in any build that is a life gain build because it restores health on every strike instead of just every enemy defeated. It's also better than its counterpart, the Bonny Butchering Knife, because it can be given a variety of different ashes of war, all of which can be used to trigger the 1% HP recovered per hit.

This is a tank build, so we actually focus on a few different ashes of war than we normally do in other builds. Almost every heavy armor tank build runs the risk of being overburdened, so we have factored in a few of the skills that get the most HP per hit but meet the style of play for a tower shield build.

Ashes of War:

  • Prayerful Strike – Enchants the weapon with holy damage and brings it slamming down on the ground in a shockwave. This heals 30% of health, not counting other healing triggers, per hit. Useful for clearing trash mobs and hammering on DLC bosses which are weak to holy in the DLC
  • Golden Land- Summons up the golden beam attack of the Erdtree Avatars, with each beam that hits triggering the healing effect.
  • Wild Strikes- This hammers the enemy with a flurry of blows that all recover HP
  • Stormcaller- This summons up a powerful storm, hitting the enemy repeatedly with a flurry of wind. This also stacks with the Divine Beast helm for damage output.

3. Icon Shield

  • Requirements: 22 Strength

This shield is one of the health regen items that can be acquired in the game. It stacks with other powers like the Royal Remains armor set and the Blessed Dew Talisman. It's also a pretty solid tower shield which gives the player an extra line of defense, which is perfect for the tank build.

4. Spear with Bloody Tax

  • Requirements: N/A

Most players will go for the pike in this build, or the longest range spears that they can find which can be given the Bloody Tax ash of war. This ash of war stabs the enemy in a flurry of strikes that not only causes bleed buildup, but it steals health from the enemy being hit per each hit. It's great for melting bosses and playing a hoplite build that keeps the shield raised and focuses on using a spear to do damage.

5. Frenzied Flame Seal

  • Requirements: N/A

This is just the lightest weight seal with the lowest stat requirements. Since this build does have some focus on bleed, we can also use the Dragon Communion seal which scales with faith and affinity.

Gear Loadout

Helms

  • Royal Remains Helm- Slowly replenishes HP when reduced
  • White Mask- increases attack when bleed occurs in the vicinity
  • Divine Beast Helm- Increases strength, dexterity, and storm damage by 4%

Armor

  • Royal Remains Armor- Slowly replenishes HP when reduced

Gauntlets

  • Royal Remains Gauntlets- Slowly replenishes HP when reduced
  • Rakshasa Gauntlets- Increases damage taken and received by 2%

Greaves

  • Royal Remains Greaves- Slowly replenishes HP when reduced
  • Rakshasa Greaves- Increases damage taken and received by 2%

Extra Essentials

Talismans

  • Godskin Swaddling Cloth- Recovers hp on each strike that is landed.
  • Verdigris Discus- Increases defense when overburdened
  • Blessed Dew Talisman- Slowly replenishes HP over time
  • Millicent's Prosthesis- Boosts dexterity and damage done by successive attacks
  • Two-Headed Turtle Talisman- Raises stamina recovery by 22.2%
  • Enraged Divine Beast- Raises the potency of storms by 10%
  • Lord of Blood's Exultation- Increases damage done when blood loss occurs in the area.

  • Vyke's Dragonbolt- Enhances endurance and enchants the right hand weapon with red lightning

Stats

  • 50 Vigor
  • 25 Mind
  • 40 Endurance
  • 50-65 Strength
  • 65-80 Dexterity
  • 7-25 Intelligence
  • 25-50 Faith
  • 20-60 Arcane

Let me Tank that

Elden Ring is not a fun game to get hit in, and if you're playing Shadow of the Erdtree you might be familiar with having a problem of walking into a boss arena and getting wiped out by the Blackgoal knight, or the golden hippo before you've even had time to drink from a flask or summon a spirit ash. It was one of the most frustrating parts I noticed when picking up the DLC, getting wiped out so fast that your runes end up outside the boss room. On the bright side, that just means that we have a chance to test out all the new gear that we can find. Whether you decide to run the heaviest armor, or the highest health, or even just a nonstop life recovery option, being able to trade blows and take blows will serve you well in the Shadow Lands.
