Who wants to take Bayern or Liverpool anyway?!
Whether you like the instant gratification of taking a big team and making them bigger or grinding your way up the leagues with savvy spending and hands-on youth development, FIFA 20’s Career Mode has been souped up once again to offer bigger and better choices across the game. I’m going to take you through the best teams to use, from the big budgets to the long-term challenge.
10. Salford City
Looking for a challenge? How about continuing Salford City’s surge up the English leagues? The League Two club has a (relatively) huge budget and lofty goals to keep challenging you.
Why Salford City is amazing:
- The joint biggest budget in the league - but the demanding challenge of Win the League Season Objective.
- Four players already in the squad have a potential rating of 71+ so get the training in and they’ll help you as you move up.
- They have a young squad in general so you can create some long-standing heroes.

9. AC Milan
Remember the monster teams Milan have had? Pirlo, Maldini, Kaka, Seedorf, Inzaghi, no club has fallen from grace quite like either Milan club in recent years. Take them back to the top of Italy - then Europe.
Why Milan is amazing:
- Some great young player potential: Donarumma 92, Paqueta 84, Romagnoli 89, Piatek 84. A great young spine.
- Zlatan. What else can I say?
- Reignite the fire of a sleeping giant of European football by bringing them back into the Champions League.

8. Bayer Leverkusen
One of everyone's top two Twitter admins (more on the other to follow), Bayer Leverkusen actually has a lot going for them for Career Mode fans. Not only can you go after the might and monopoly of Bayern Munich, but they also have some fantastic players to develop.
Why Bayer Leverkusen is amazing:
- With these potentials; Havertz 93, Bailey 88, Palacios 88, Tah 86, and the budget for a decent young striker, you can have a beast team in a season or two.
- You start with a competitive team that you can expect to challenge for trophies.
- A decent budget coupled with high expectations for domestic success and youth development is a healthy challenge.

7. AS Roma
The admin that created a wave of new fans. The opposite of Leverkusen for youth development, but the Roma board expects good things in European and domestic competition.
Why AS Roma is amazing:
- A very usable budget to add a couple of names to a deep squad.
- With Zaniolo, Kluivert, and Cetin you have three players with potential growth of 10 points. Perfect for those nurturing managers.
- Pau Lopez is a 23-year-old, 88 potential GK, with a contract to 2024. Build the team from him or make some good money to reinvest.

6. Real Madrid
With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo the Galacticos are officially no more in my opinion. Balance one of the world's biggest names with the need to rebuild. Those Champions League successes seem forever ago now.
Why Real Madrid is amazing:
- Potential alert: Rodrygo 91, Vinicius Jr 92, Jovic 89, Valverde 89, Militao 88, Mendy 87. If you like building on youth then you’ve got a headstart here.
- Don’t sleep on Brahim Diaz. Give him some game time as he has a +13 curve to the heights of 86 AND a 5-Star Weak Foot. A big-time sell on profit option.
- The biggest budget in the game with the reputation to attract almost anyone. I’d clear out the likes of Kroos, James, and Bale to have a war chest ready to go.

5. RB Salzburg
Why RB Salzburg is amazing:
- Here’s a challenge: Take Karim Adeyeni from 67 to his full potential of 87 over the course of your tenure.
- Here’s another challenge: win the Europa League with a club boasting a £12m budget.
- You only have four players over the age of 23, and it’s actually a lot of fun improving players, making a profit, and reinvesting in youth again.

4. Ajax
The Dutch champions won themselves a bunch of new fans by running through Real Madrid and Juventus on their way to the Champions League semi-final last year, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion to Tottenham. I’m not even Dutch and I still haven’t gotten over it, although the fact I very much dislike Spurs probably factors into that...
Why Ajax is amazing:
- Comfortably the highest budget in Dutch football, but way off the pace of Europe’s elite, so you’ll need to pull off a miracle to take them all the way.
- You’ve got a lot of options with high potential that are immediately usable anyway, like Onana (85-89), Ziyech (86-87), van de Beek (83-88), and Neres (81-86).
- Ajax is famed for its youth system. In FIFA 20 you have Schuurs (18yo), Dest (17), Gravenberch (16), and Traore (17). Gravenberch is the main man to invest in, with a +17 growth taking him to an 87 rated CM.

3. Sunderland
Who else has seen the Netflix documentary? If so, you’ll know that Sunderland have had quite the eventful few years, and that leaves you with the task of restoring their Premier League status.
Why Sunderland is amazing:
- By far the biggest budget in the division so the pressure is on to seal promotion straight away.
- You can get stuck right into the transfer market as there are a lot of surplus players to move on. Wheelers and dealers come on in.
- You have a certain central midfielder by the name of Max Power. If you’re not building a team around him then something’s wrong.

2. Lyon
One of the premier clubs in France - only without the cheat code-worthy cash that Paris Saint-Germain have. OL has a quite brilliant balance of current and future stars, giving you options of cashing in and building youth or staying out of the transfer market and building a homegrown superteam.
Why Lyon is amazing:
- To get you started you have the potential of Depay (88), Aouar (89), Dembele (85), Lopez (87), and Andersen (86) to form the spine of the team.
- The second biggest budget in Ligue 1, but still streets behind PSG (obviously), so you’ll have your work cut out going for a league title.
- With Reine-Adelaide (75-85), Caqueret (72-86), Gouiri (69-85), and Solet (66-81) you have a supreme crop of talent to develop.

1. Chelsea
Ah, Chelsea, the team most English football fans love to hate. However, national hero Frank Lampard has put his faith in youth this season and seen a real turnaround in the club’s reputation among rival fans. I know I hate them a lot less than I did last year - although it helps that Manchester United have beaten them three times this season.
Why Chelsea is amazing (that seems very wrong for me to say...):
- This could be your team with fully realized potential and ZERO transfers: Kepa 89; James 87, Tomori 86, Christensen 87, Emerson 82; Kovacic 87, Gilmour 86, Mount 87; Abraham 86, Hudson-Odoi 88, Pulisic 86.
- Gilmour in particular is a great pet project to develop his 22 points of potential rating.
- A very decent £80m transfer kitty to splash out on some strong additions (when you can and if you even want to).

A quick bonus option for you that you would never have thought of on your own - choose whoever you support. For me, my mighty hometown Carlisle United have the joint-lowest budget in the English League Two, and trying to take them to the Champions League final is always the first thing I try when I boot up a new FIFA.
If you’ve read my content in the past you’ll know that I have a weakness for just having fun for the hell of it, and this certainly applies to Career Mode as well. It’s a game everyone! We might as well enjoy it.
