What are Hidden Abilities?

Hi, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet fans, let’s talk about Hidden Abilities.

Fun fact: There are 267 Abilities in total, and every one of them may be considered a hidden ability for certain Pokémon.

Hidden Abilities are rare abilities that are powerful to a Pokémon using an Ability Patch.

To an extent, there are other Pokémon that naturally learn Hidden Abilities as their Normal Ability.

There are times when the Hidden Ability is more powerful to a Pokémon based on its type, stats, and the moves it learns.

For example, Pikachu can learn Static as a normal Ability, as Static is Zapados’s Hidden Ability.

Zapados is far more powerful than Pikachu and has higher Special Defense and Special Attack stats to use its Electric-Type and Flying-Type moves.

With a Hidden Ability, you either want a rare Pokémon or a Pokémon that’s found occasionally. Some Pokémon may share the same Hidden Ability but offer different type-advantages and stats.

Choosing the best Hidden Ability depends on the Pokémon’s strengths and situation you’re going against, such as Tera Raids and Double Battles.

11. Sand Force

Image
image
Merciless Rock, Ground, and Steel Pokémon know how to stand their “ground.”

Sand Force description:

Sand Force increases the power of Ground, Rock, and Steel Type moves by 30% during a sandstorm. The effect lasts 5 turns, unless it is cleared by Air Lock or Cloud Nine or replaced by another weather condition.

The Pokémon that can learn Sand Force as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Diglett / Dugtrio
  • Aloan Diglett / Dugtrio
  • Nosepass / Probopass
  • Shellos / Gastrodon
  • Hippopotas / Hippowdon

Analysis:

Sand Force is most useful for Ground, Rock, and Steel-Type Pokémon.

Rock-Types can boost their moves against powerful Flying, Bug, Ice, and Fire-Types.

Ground-types can boost their moves against powerful Electric, Fire, and Poison-Types.

Steel-Types can boost their moves against powerful Fairy and Ice-Types.

To activate Sand Force, the Pokémon must learn the move Sandstorm.

During Tera Raids, Single Battles, and Doubles, you can cancel out opposing Weather conditions with Sand Force.

Ideally, the opponent or opponents are weak against Ground, Rock, and Steel moves.

Example:

  • Probopass can learn Sand Force as a Hidden Ability.
  • Probopass is best suited as a supporting Pokémon during Tera Raids and Double Battles, assisting Pokémon such as Garchomp.
  • Probopass has 150 Special Defense whereas Garchomp has 130 Attack.
  • Even if both of them can learn Sandstorm, Probopass should be the one to activate it because it has higher Special Defense stats than Garchomp.
  • There's a slight possibility that Sand Storm can last a little longer in battle.
  • The strategy is to make Garchomp stronger as its Attack reaches 169 and Probopass’s Attack reaches 71. Garchomp always plays as an offensive Pokémon.
  • Sand Force also increases defense moves.
  • Probopass should use a Steel defensive move, Iron Defense to last throughout battle.
  • Probopass should use the Rock defensive move, Wide Guard, to protect its team from all multi-target moves similar to moves like Surf.

10. Snow Warning

Image
image
Ice Pokémon have a great edge in battle by freezing their opponents.

Snow Warning Description:

Snow Warning creates a hailstorm when the ability-bearer enters battle.

A hailstorm lasting five turns damages all Pokémon except the Ice-type.

The effect lasts 5 turns, unless it is cleared by Air Lock or Cloud Nine or replaced by another weather condition.

The Pokémon that can learn Snow Warning as a Hidden Ability:

  • Aloan Vulpix / Aloan Ninetails

Analysis:

Snow Warning is most useful for Ice-Type Pokémon.

Ice-Types are strong against Dragon, Flying, Grass, and Ground-Types.

Snow Warning, as a Hidden Ability, helps other Ice-Types with other Abilities or Hidden Abilities.

Snow Warning's double-edged sword is that once it's eliminated by another Weather Condition, you will have to counter the Weather Condition by swapping out your Pokémon, and have them enter battle again. The swap out and in technique is only effective in single and double battles.

Use Snow Warning against Pokémon weak against Ice-Types.

Example:

  • Aloan Ninetails can learn Snow Warning as a Hidden Ability.
  • Aloan Ninetials can assist other Ice-Types during competitive double battles or Tera Raids by having hailstorms activate their other Abilities.
  • For example, Glaceon has the Ice Body Hidden Ability, recovering 1⁄16 of its maximum HP during hail after each turn. It also grants immunity to hailstorm damage if it is not already immune.
  • As another example, Sandslash has Snow Cloak as a normal Ability, raising its evasiveness by 20% during a hailstorm. Mamoswine can learn this Ability too.
  • Aloan Ninetails, Sandslash, Glaceon, and Mamoswine make a great snow team in a tera raid against a Dragon and Flying Type with a Flying Tera Type.
  • Once Aloan Ninetails enters battle, the first 3 moves should be building Tera Charge.
  • Glaceon should use moves like Snowscape, raising Defense for Ice Types. It should use Blizzard as a Special Attack to build Tera Orb charge. Blizzard may freeze the tera target.
  • Sandslash should use moves like Icicle Crash to build Tera Orb charge. Icicle Crash can cause the Tera Target to flinch.
  • Mamoswine should use moves like Icy Fang to build Tera Orb charge. Icy Fang might make the tera target flinch and could be frozen.
  • Aloan Ninetails should join the action by using Icy Wind to build Tera Orb charge.
  • Flying Pokémon are usually fast, and Icy Wind is a move that can lower the target's Speed stat by 1 stage.
  • Once the Tera Target's shield is up, on the 4'th turn, the team should Terastalize as Ice-Tera-Types. During the hailstorm, they should use their most powerful Ice moves, such as Blizzard dealing 110 damage. All should aim to succeed on the 5'th turn.

9. Chlorophyll

Image
image
Pumped-up Grass Pokémon need the sun!

Chlorophyll Description:

Chlorophyll doubles the ability-bearer's Speed during bright sunshine.

Abilities like Drought and Orichalcum Pulse can activate Chlorophyll.

Moves like Sunny Day can activate Chlorophyll.

If a Pokémon holds a Heat Rock, harsh sunlight lasts 8 turns.

Pokémon that can learn Chlorophyll as a Hidden Ability:

  • Bulbasaur / Ivysaur / Venusaur
  • Leafeon
  • Cottonee / Whimsicott

Analysis:

Chlorophyll’s most useful for Grass-Type Pokémon, as they can learn the move Sunny Day.

Grass-Types are strong against Ground, Rock, and Water-Types.

Chlorophyll, as a hidden ability, makes Grass-Type Pokémon an astounding assistant to Fire-Type Pokémon because they both benefit from Sunny Day powering up Fire and Solar Moves.

Most importantly, Grass-Types should be semi-supporting Pokémon and semi-offensive Pokémon with great evasiveness. You would want this because of how Solar Beam works.

Normally, Solar Beam gathers light on the first turn and deals 120 damage on the next. With Sunny Day it goes once.

You want Chlorophyll to pair with Solar Beam because if the effects of Sunny Day run out, your Grass-Type Pokémon can evade incoming attacks while preparing their Solar Beam attack while waiting for Sunny Day again.

Using the same tactic, Grass-Types can repeat moves like Synthesis to regain HP.

Chlorophyll is an awesome ability for both double battles and Tera Raids.

Example:

  • Venusaur can learn Chlorophyll as a Hidden Ability.
  • Venusaur is a great Pokémon for Tera Raids and Double Battles, assisting Pokémon such as Leafeon, Talonflame, and Ceruledge.
  • An ideal Tera Raid for Venusaur to participate in is facing against a Bug and Rock-Type with a Rock Tera Type, such as Kleavor.
  • During the Raid, Pokémon such as Ceruledge may activate Sunny Day immediately while Talonflame and Leafeon may use attacks to lower Kleavor’s Attack stat.
  • Venusaur’s role is to use Solar Beam or Magical Leaf as much as possible.
  • Magical Leaf deals 60 damage and ignores changes to opposing Accuracy and Evasion stats.
  • Venusaur should use one of its powders, Sleep Powder, to make Kleavor sleep and use moves like Leech Seed to regain a little HP after every turn. This helps its allies to attack Kleavor.
  • During Kleavor’s slumber, one of the allies should use Sunny Day on the 3’rd move from when Sleep Powder was in effect.
  • This is to help Venusaur and Leafeon, who may have the Chlorophyll Hidden Ability.
  • The Chlorophyll Hidden Ability will be extremely useful when Kleavor wakes up on the 4th turn from Sleep Powder’s effects.
  • Kleavor may attack Venusaur and Leafeon with a powerful move. Veanusaur and Leafeon may be able to evade it, or the attack may miss. Venusaur may try attacking to build Tera Orb Charge or use Sleep Powder again.

8. Swift Swim

Image
image
Drednaw stays aggressive in the rain!

Swift Swim description:

Swift Swim doubles the ability-bearer’s Speed stat during the effects of rain and the move of Rain Dance.

The Pokémon that can learn Swift Swim as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Psyduck / Goldduck
  • Poliwag / Poliwhirl / Poliwrath
  • Beartic
  • Chewtle / Drednaw

Analysis:

Swift Swim is most useful for Water-Type Pokémon.

Water-Types are strong against Rock, Ground, and Fire.

Swift Swim is like Chlorophyll, which shares the same strategy for Water -Types.

The Pokémon with the Swift Swim ability should be semi-supporting Pokémon and semi-offensive Pokémon.

This Hidden Ability is one of the most popular during 7-Star-Tera-Raids.

You should pair this Hidden Ability with moves like Rain Dance, Belly Drum, Liquidation, Clear Smog, Psybeam, and Water Pulse.

Example:

  • The qualifying Pokémon with the hidden ability, Psyduck, Poliwag, Beartic, and Drednaw make a great team together.
  • Goldluck and Poliwrath have the most balanced stats while Drednaw and Beartic have higher Attack stats. Drednaws has 115 Attack. Beartic has 130 Attack.
  • An ideal Tera Raid for them to face should be against a Ground and Psychic Pokémon with a Ground Tera Type. Poliwrath’s Fighting hybrid can become a great asset, since Psychic-Types are weak to Fighting moves.
  • When all of them enter battle, one of them should activate Rain Dance so their Swift Swim ability activates. Their attacks should move smoothly, hoping they evade incoming attacks.
  • For this specific Tera Raid, Poliwrath is the main offensive leader because it is the only member of this team that can learn the Belly Drum move, cutting half of its HP to increase its Attack.
  • Drednaw can use one of its Egg Moves, Gastro Acid to cancel the Tera Target’s Ability.
  • By evading incoming attacks with their Swift Swim ability, all of them should use powerful moves that have secondary beneficial effects, such as confusing the target.
  • Beartic and Poliwrath should boost their Attack and Defense stat with Bulk Up.
  • Goldduck can use Water Pulse, dealing 60 damage and can confuse the target, while the 3 physical Attackers can lead with Liquidation to lower the Tera Targets Defense.
  • Whenever the Tera Target boosts their stats Goldduck should use Clear Smog to remove all of the Tera Target’s stat changes.
  • When the Tera Shield is up and the Tera Target results from confusion, the Swift Swim team should Teratsalize and end the Tera fight with their powerful moves.
  • Goldduck’s powerful move is Hydro Pump, Drednaw’s is Liquidation, and Beartic’s is Focus Punch. By evading incoming attacks, it can deal 150 damage.
  • Poliwrath’s HP should get the red zone when the Tera Target’s shield’s HP is almost crashing. Let it use Reversal to finish the fight.

7. Cloud Nine

Image
image
Altaria likes no weather at all!

Cloud Nine Description:

Cloud Nine eliminates the effects of weather while the ability user is on the battlefield including move power increases, end-of-turn damage, accuracy changes, and relevant weather-like abilities.

The following weather-like abilities it cancels are:

  • Chlorophyll
  • Rain Dish
  • Drought
  • Drizzle
  • Sand Stream
  • Snow Warning

Weather moves like Weather Ball, fail when Cloud Nine is in effect as long as the user stays in the battlefield.

Pokémon who can learn Cloud Nine as a Hidden Ability:

  • Swablu / Altaria

Analysis:

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Cloud Nine Hidden Ability is unique to only Altaria because it has great Defense and Special Defense stats.

Altaria is a Dragon and Flying Pokémon, strong against Dragon, Bug, Fighting, and Grass-Types.

Altaria is super strong when it’s a Fairy Tera Type to become immune to Dragon-Types and can be strong against Dark-Types.

Eliminating weather effects on the battlefield makes Altaria an aggressive defensive Pokémon.

Cloud Nine is a simple and reliable Hidden Ability used during Tera Raids and competitive single and double battles.

Example:

  • Altaria may be a preferred Pokémon when facing any Tera Raid with an elemental type to cancel their weather-like abilities and weather-like moves.
  • Altaria may be a preferred Pokémon when facing a Tera Raid with a Dragon and Flying Type and a Dragon Tera Type. Dragonite is a great example.
  • Altaria should be one of the best Pokémon when facing a Tera Raid with a Dragon and Dark Type and a Dark Tera Type. Tyranitar is a great example.
  • Dragonite can learn Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Sandstorm, and Snowscape.
  • Tyranitar can learn Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Sandstorm.
  • When Altaria enters battle, Dragonite’s and Tyranitar’s weather moves will fail. Altaria should prioritize its aggressive Fairy-Type moves, such as Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast. Draco Meteor is a great move.
  • In Tera Raids and in any battle, the strategy with Altaria is to become hard to hit, using the move Cotton Guard, which raises Altaria’s Defense by three stages.
  • Altaria can instantly put opponents to sleep with moves like Sing.
  • Altaria is incredibly powerful with the Cloud Nine ability and can do many things, such as using Mist, where its stats can’t be changed for a period of time.
  • In double battles, using moves like Safeguard protects Alataria’s allies from status conditions.

6. Corrosion

Image
image
Don't underestimate tiny-cute Salandit, it's toxic!

Corrosion description:

Corrosion allows the bearer to poison any Pokémon, including Steel and Poison-Types.

The Pokémon that can learn Corrosion as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Glimlett/ Glimmora

Analysis:

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Corrosion Hidden Ability is unique to Glimmora because it's an Ore Pokémon with a Poison and Rock-Type.

The Poison and Rock hybrid category is a growing category in the franchise. Their strengths are like a Katana, strong against:

  • Bug
  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Ice
  • Fairy
  • Grass

The Corrosion Hidden Ability adds Poison and Steel to the “strong against” category.

Glimmora’s among the most popular choices for Regulation G competitive battles because it can assist a Legendary in battle.

If trainers face an opponent using Diagla, they should have Glimmora hidden in their sleeve to attack Diagla with Poison-Type effects.

Example:

  • During any online battle (for fun, and competitive) analyze the opponent’s team’s Pokémon. Add your Glimmora if you see plentiful opposing Steel-Types such as Lucario, Scizor, Metagross, and Diagla.
  • In Single Battle, make Glimmora your 1st Pokémon and use its Corrosion Hidden Ability by choosing one of its Poison-Type moves, such as Toxic Spikes, poisoning the opponent’s switching in and out of battle.
  • In doubles, make Glimmora your 1’st or 2’nd Pokémon, and use the same technique for Single Battles.
  • Glimmora has high Special Attack (130), so prioritize using moves like Sludge Wave, against powerful Poison and Steel Pokémon. Sludge Wave does 95 damage.
  • Use the move Venoshock to make the opponent’s poison worse. If the opponent is poisoned, Venoshock doubles their damage. It does 65 damage.
  • Acid Armor is a helpful move for Glimmora, raising its Defense by 2 stages.
  • Glimmora’s Rock-Type moves may not enhance the Corrosion Hidden Ability. However, to counter opposing Flying-Types, use moves like Smack Down to make them weak to Ground-Moves and partially stop their evasiveness. Then, land Poison-Type attacks.
  • If the opponent is not using Ground, Rock, or Steel Pokémon, Glimmora can poison an opponent and activate Sandstorm to enhance its Rock, Ground, and Steel-Type moves.
  • Against other Poison-Types, Glimmora should use Gunk Shot (120 damage) on them or Earth Power (90 damage).

5. Costar

Image
image
Flamigo's always Stat ready no matter if its Max Defense or Attack!

Costar Description:

When the Pokémon enters a battle, it copies an ally’s stat changes.

The Pokémon that can learn Costar as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Flamingo

Analysis:

The Costar Hidden Ability is unique to Flamigo, a Flying and Fighting-Type Pokémon. It’s important that it holds a Shell Bell, ensuring it regains HP after every attack.

This Hidden Ability is built for only competitive double battles.

Don’t underestimate Flamigo because it is strong against:

  • Bug
  • Fighting
  • Grass
  • Dark
  • Ice
  • Normal
  • Rock
  • Steel

The strategy behind Costar is crazily overpowered in competitive battles. It just might work if you do it precisely. The idea is that before you switch in Flamigo into a double battle, you must boost a Pokémon’s Attack and Defense.

Example 1: (The longest strategy specifically to Dondozo):

  • Many competitive players have found a way to use Flamigo.
  • First, they have an Orange Tatsugiri on the field with another Pokémon, like Gyrados. Tatsugiri should hold a Toxic Orb, poisoning itself at every turn.
  • When Orange Tatsugiri has a status condition, such as poison below 10% HP, swap in Dondozo, replacing Gyrados.
  • Dondozo and Orange Tatsugiri have a special connection when in battle together, as there are different types of Tatsugiri.
  • This is to make Dondozo’s move Order Up work, and the Tatsugiri must have the Commander Ability, going inside Dondozo’s mouth when they’re in battle together.
  • The move Order Up deals 80 damage toward the opponent while boosting Dondozo’s stat depending on which Tatugiri is in its mouth.
  • Orange Tatsugiri raises Dondozo’s Attack.
  • Pink Tatsugiri raises Dondozo’s Defense.
  • Yellow Tatsugiri raises Dondozo’s Speed.
  • When Dondozo swaps into battle, Tatsugiri uses its Commander Ability to go into Dondozo’s mouth.
  • Tatsugiri becomes untouchable to attacks and can’t attack in battle.
  • While Tatsugiri is inside Dondozo, Dondozo gets +2 in all of its stats. Dondozo is the only Pokémon that can act on your team.
  • Dondozo should use the move Order Up plenty of times until Orange Tatsugiri faints (from holding Toxic Orb), maxing out its Attack stat.
  • When Dondozo reaches max Attack stats and Tatsugiri faints, swap in Flamigo.
  • Flamingo will copy every stat that Dondozo has increased and use super effective Flying or Fighting moves such as Brave Bird or Close Combat to sweep the opponent's entire team.

Example 2: (Shortest strategy):

  • In double battles, Costar has a great duo-type advantage.
  • As an example, allow Garchomp to max out Swords Dance.
  • Have Pokémon like Garganacl use moves like Wide Guard to protect Garchomp and itself. You can also use Helping Hand on Garchomp to make the process faster.
  • It’s highly important that Garganacl uses Rock Salt, and maxes it out. Rock Salt increases its Speed stats by 2 stages.
  • You need to design that Garganacl on your team is the Pokémon that always makes the 1’st move and Garchomp 2’nd.
  • When Garchomp’s Attack stat maxes out, keep Garganacl in momentarily, ensuring the opponent keeps their Fairy-Type Pokémon. Fairy Types are extremely weak against Fighting-Types.
  • Then, swap in Flamigo for Garganacl.

4. Healer

Image
image
Blissey and Chancey to the rescue!

Healer Description:

At the end of each turn, there’s a 30% chance that the ability-bearer may cure the status conditions of the Pokémon’s allies.

The Pokémon that can learn Healer as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Chancey / Blissey
  • Bellossom

Analysis:

One of the most important Hidden Abilities is Healer, as you don't want your Pokémon to faint!

This Ability is useful for participating in Online Double Battles and Tera Raids.

The Healer Hidden Ability is unique to Chancey when it’s holding an Eviolite, which increases the Defense and Special Defense of a Pokémon that can still evolve.

Chancey is a Normal type designed as a dominant supporting-Pokémon. It uses moves like Helping Hand, Healing Wish, and its Egg Move Heal Bell. Heal Bell heals the user's party's status conditions completely.

Chimecho naturally learns the move Heal Bell by leveling it up.

With the Healer Hidden Ability, Chancey has other excellent egg moves:

  • Gravity - Prevents moves like Fly, Bounce, and the Levitate Ability for 5 turns
  • Present - Either deals 90 damage or heals 90 HP
  • Chancey should only use Heal Bell if its Healer Hidden Ability sometimes fails. The Hidden Ability is not always 100%, even if it does work at times during battles and in Tera Raids.

Example:

  • Chancey can be incorporated for any Tera Raid since it doesn’t need to learn attacks to be useful.
  • Moves like Life Dew pair well with Healer because it recovers 25% of Chancey’s and its allies’ HP.
  • Chancey should use moves like Helping Hand to increase its allies’ Attack and Special Attack. Holding an Eviolite will increase Chancey’s Defense and Special Defense moves.
  • A Move like Heal Pulse is another alternate healing move, restoring half of the target's maximum HP. The target should only be Chacney’s allies.
  • There’s many ways Chancey can stay alive during the Tera Raids.
  • Soft Boiled is crucial for Chancey to stay alive during a Tera Raid, as Chancey recovers 50% of its HP.
  • Another alternative is Defense Curl, which raises Chancey's Defense by 1 stage. When it’s maxed out, Chancey takes extremely minimal damage from powerful attacks, considering its high HP (250).
  • Chancey can activate Rain Dance to increase the effects of Life Dew.
  • Healing Wish only works in battles. It’s an essential move for when Chancey faints; the next Pokémon in your party with low HP switches in battle with full HP.

3. Infiltrator

Image
image
Malamar ignores Slowpoke’s Light Screen.

Infiltrator Description:

The Pokémon’s moves are unaffected by the target’s barriers, substitutes, and the like.

As an example, the user ignores the effects of Light Screen, Reflect, and Safeguard. If the opponent uses Safeguard or Substitute, the user’s move, such as Toxic, can still poison the opponent.

The Pokémon that can learn Infiltrator:

  • Hoppip / Skiploom / Jumpluff
  • Ninjask
  • Seviper
  • Spiritomb
  • Litwick / Lampent / Chandelure
  • Inkay / Malamar
  • Bramblin / Brambleghast

Analysis:

Infiltrator is a popular hidden ability among Pokémon hybrids:

  • Grass and Flying
  • Bug and Flying
  • Dark and Psychic
  • Ghost and Fire
  • Grass and Ghost

Infiltrator is least popular with Poison-Types, such as Seviper.

While the above category can learn a few Poison-type moves, Seviper benefits the most from the Infiltrator Hidden Ability because it can learn more Poison-Type moves.

The opponent will not expect to be poisoned when they’ve used moves like Safeguard to protect themselves from status conditions.

The Infiltrator ability is best for online battles and Tera Raids, as aggressive players will favor this Hidden Ability the most.

You may wonder how to attempt Fairy and Grass Tera Raids while Poison Pokémon are strong against them.

Example:

  • Seviper has balanced base stats, and its most impressive stats are its Attack (100) and Special Attack (100). EV training can always improve those stats further. It’s suggested that you increase its Special Defense and Speed manually.
  • Allow Seviper to enter a Fairy or Grass Tera Raid. For example, participate in an Altaria Fairy Type Tera Raid. Altaria is known for moves like Safeguard and learning Light Screen and Reflect.
  • When entering battle, Seviper’s first move should be Poison Fang, dealing 50 damage and having a 50% chance to poison the Tera Target.
  • Use Poison Fang a couple of times to build Tera Orb charge. In case Altaria uses Safeguard, Poison Fang should still work.
  • When Altaria’s poisoned, allow Seviper to Terastalize early and use the move Venoshock, dealing 130 damage to Altaria.

2. Static

Image
image
Booyah, Pikachu makes a critical-paralyzing-hit!

Static Description:

If a Pokémon with Static, is hit by a move making contact, there is a 30% chance the foe will become paralyzed.

The Pokémon that can learn Static as a Hidden Ability is:

  • Zapados

Analysis:

Static is meant for Electric-Type Pokémon.

Static as a Hidden Ability is special to Zapados, who can be obtained after completing Blueberry Academy.

Zapados is an Electric and Flying Pokémon strong against:

  • Water
  • Flying
  • Bug
  • Fighting
  • Grass

Static is an awesome Hidden Ability for Zapados when facing Fighting-Type Pokémon or any Pokémon that can learn any physical attacks.

While Zapados can paralyze opponents with Electric-Type moves, it's designed so Zapados can use some of its Special Defense moves and threaten the opponent even more. The Hidden Ability may save a lot of moves by forgetting moves like Thunder Wave for Electric Terrain or Eerie Impulse.

Since competitive battles may rely on being aggressive, this strategy may be best suited for Tera Raids. Zapados would want the Tera Target to hit it using set-up moves such as Eerie Impulse, Tailwind, and Charge.

Static is also perfect for catching Pokémon in case Zapados doesn’t have to use a move. For instance, in the first catch, you were unsuccessful. The wild Pokémon makes a physical attack. As a result, they’re paralyzed. Try catching it again. Status conditions may increase catch rates.

Example:

  • Zapados can be a great counter against Urshifu in a tera raid when Urshifu has a Water Tera Type.
  • The strategy’s truly simple, use Charge to increase Zapados’ Special Defense by 1 stage and allow Urshifu to hit Zapados. At least get Zapados’ Special Defense by 3 - 4 stages.
  • Allow Urshifu to get paralyzed by landing a physical Attack on Zapados.
  • After Urshifu gets paralyzed, use moves like Tailwind to increase Zapados and its ally’s Speed stats. Then, use Electric Terrain to boost Electric-Type moves.
  • Start attacking with moves like Thunder, dealing 110 damage and may increase the length of Urshifu’s paralyze condition.

1. Water Absorb

Image
image
Water Pokémon with Water Absorb are so powerful!

Water Absorb description:

A Pokémon with Water Absorb heals 1⁄4 of its maximum HP when hit by a Water-Type attack.

The Pokémon that can learn Water Absorb as a Hidden Ability are:

  • Chinchou / Lanturn
  • Cacnea / Cacturne
  • Dewpider / Araquanid

Analysis:

Water Absorb is meant for Water-Type Pokémon that can fight opposing Water-Types that may have a second typing weakness to one of your Pokémon’s hybrid moves.

This Hidden Ability is #1 because it’s meant for Tera Raids, even 7-Star Tera Raids!

It’s ruthless during competitive battles because if a Pokémon learns this, they are harder to knock out.

For this Ability to work, the Pokémon must learn effective moves against water Types, such as Electric and Grass-Type moves, which are most super effective.

Now, with Terastalization in mind, it always depends on the Target’s Tera Type Weakness.

Example:

  • Lanturn is a Water and Electric Type Pokémon.
  • It could benefit from being an Electric Tera Type, boosting its Electric-Type moves, and Water-Type moves against Lanturn will become ineffective while also healing Lanturn.
  • During a Tera Raid battle against a Water and Flying Type with a Water Tera Type, Lanturn should use most of its Electric Moves.
  • Eerie Impulse is a great example of lowering the Target's Special Attack by two stages. Thunderbolt is a powerful 90 damage attack.
  • Lanturn’s role in a Tera Raid is to be offensive. It should paralyze the Tera Target and lower its Special Attacks. This will allow teammates to take reduced damage from Water-Type Special Attacks.
  • By having the Water Absorb Ability for defense measures, Lanturn doesn’t have to worry about losing HP if the Tera Target only uses Water-Type moves against Lantun.
  • The opposing Water Tera Type Target will have a harder time penetrating Lanturn’s defense and offense.
