The Witcher is finally getting a film adaptation
It would seem that fans need not wait long to jump back into the epic fantasy world of created by acclaimed polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Yes, we are finally getting a Witcher movie. As a fellow fan of the White Wolf, I find it to be my obligation to tell you guys everything we know about the upcoming movie.
1. The Witcher joins Assassin’s creed in the attempt to break the video game curse of bad movie adaptations.
"Evil is evil, lesser, greater, middling...it makes no difference."
The Sean Daniel Company (SDC), an American production company will be teaming up with Platige Image in order to bring this to the big screen. I know that those names wouldn’t have made any sense at all to most, but I haven’t finished yet.
The Sean Daniel Company are responsible for the Mummy franchise and for The Expanse TV show. Their Polish partners, Platige Image are known to have worked on the cinematics for the Witcher games. Thania st. John, a veteran scriptwriter who had previously worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Grimm is set to pen the script.
Unfortunately, CD Projekt Red will not be involved in the film despite owning the rights to the brand. No reason has been given as to why but maybe they are a bit occupied with their new project, Cyberpunk 2077.
2. From pages to consoles to the big screen
Silver or steel, monsters or men. What will we see in theaters?
The movie will be directed by Platige Image’s creative director, Tomasz Bagiński. Tomasz Bagiński was nominated for an Oscar for his animated short, The Cathedral. He also helmed the cinematics for the Witcher games.
This begs the question, Will it be live-action or CG animated. With the inclusion of Platige Image into the project and considering their previous work, the chances of a live-action movie are pretty thin. But I think it’s safe to say it’s in good hands.
3. A ghost from LOST’s past?
Am i the only one or is the resemblance uncanny?
Though nothing official has been revealed about the casting, Speculation has been running wild nonetheless. Lost’s Josh Holloway is said to play the White Wolf, Geralt of Rivia. The news seems to be a little too good to be true, and it was. Platige Image proceeded to drop a bomb on this rumor by saying the following, “we’re not LOST - sorry!” on their facebook page.
Anna Rust to play Cirilla or Ciri was another casting rumor that is yet to be denied.
4. Not a remake of the game!!!
From vibrant bustling town, bloody battlefields to forbidding forests...
The movie will not be a direct adaptation of the video games. Instead it will be basesd on the book of short stories, The Last Wish. Specifically on the “The Witcher” and “The Lesser Evil” stories.
Both of them are typical Witcher stories and will be perfect to bring in a newer wider audience into the Witcher universe. “The Witcher” story will deal with the hunt for the Strigga, as seen in the Into sequence of the first Witcher game and will be an ideal introduction into the dynamics of the Witcher universe. “The Lesser Evil” will serve to set the tone of the universe by showing off the grey morality and the punishing world that the game is famous for.
5. The carnage will continue...
Intriguing yet annoying characters fill the world of the Witcher.
It just keeps getting better. The movie might serve as a prelude to a Game of Thrones-esque TV show that will be set to explore the different corners of the dark fantasy world and all the “colorful” adventures of the Witcher. Besides the TV show, the possibility of future movies are also quite high.
With Ubisoft taking the lead in the attempt to finally making a good video game movie, i think the world is finally ready for the Witcher to go mainstream. With a rich and a brutal world filled with interesting lore and backstory, the Witcher promises to take our cinematice experience to the next level.
