If you have played Outlast and loved it, here is a list of horror games that can provide you with hours of “fun,” scares, and adventure. Games that can be even better than Outlast according to your preferences :)

#10 Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC - 2013)

Released in 2013, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is like a sequel to the classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but with different characters and ahead in time.

The story in "A Machine for Pigs" is surrounded by puzzles, and the greatest appeal of this game is to crack them. Your character is Oswald Mandus, a British inventor who wakes up on the dreary night of New Year's Eve 1899 with no memory of anything that happened in the past six months.

The setting of "Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs" is creepy, with dim environments, full of pig corpses as you explore and that strong feeling of being chased.

#9 Silent Hill II (PS2, Xbox, PC - 2001)

Silent Hill 2 is the second game in the Silent Hill series of horror games, published by Konami and made by Team Silent. The game was released in late 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and until today is considered a timeless masterpiece of the horror game genre, especially because of the plot, drama, and psychological depths. The game starts when James Sunderland, the protagonist, goes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife, who died of a terminal disease three years before.

#8 Alien Isolation (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC - 2014)

Alien Isolation represents an excellent sample of space horror. In the story, Amanda Ripley is the protagonist that takes an opportunity that may result in substantial hints to find her missing mother. The shot goes bad, and the protagonist finds herself abandoned on Sevastopol, the giant space station. With no supplies and practically no weapons, Ripley investigates the station tracking her counterparts and other crew fellows but ends up facing her most threatening bogey: the awful Alien. During the game Ripley has a challenging goal, leaving Sevastopol.

#7 Dead Space (PS3, Xbox 360, PC - 2008)

The survival horror game was produced by EA Redwood Shores and released by EA on October 14, 2008.

The story begins in 2507 when the Earth was ruined by humans, more specifically by the constant hunt for new energy resources. The number of alive people has been much reduced and is now depending on space travels. Ishimura is a specialized spaceship that researches and locates new resources on other planets. The ship is the central setting of the game.

You are the engineer Isaac Clarke, who goes to encounter his girlfriend Nicole Brennan, a doctor on Ishimura. However, the vehicle is unsettling, with ruined compartments, blood marks everywhere, and confusing recordings spread, revealing that something is seriously wrong. Parting from this, you must stay alive, find your girlfriend and save other survivors, finding a route out of this insanity.

#6 Until Dawn (PS4 - 2015)

Until Dawn was one of the most highly rated releases of 2015. The game consists of a survival horror that remembers the old slash movies, such as Friday the 13th.

In the story, we have a serial killer hunting eight protagonists, each with its characteristics. The youths need to try to survive until dawn to get out alive. The eight protagonists are in the hands of those who play, and the actions and choices will have consequences for them, reflecting the "butterfly effect."

There is also a character breaking the fourth wall of Until Dawn that wants to discover what players are afraid of, shaping some aspects of the game, an analyst called Doctor Hill.

#5 Layers of Fear (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC - 2016)

Layers Of Fear is a first-person horror game that sets the player in the shoes of an enigmatic painter. He is on a probe to recover his inspiration to paint a final masterpiece. While examining his house and studio, elements of his life are gradually revealed in memos and letters. With each new piece of material gathered to complete his masterpiece, and with each new hideous detail of his life, the game blends terror and insanity.

#4 Friday the 13th the Game (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC - 2017)

Unlike the other games mentioned, this game is for those who do not want to face horror alone, and who do not need a very deep story, just the adrenaline rush of being chased.

The game is multiplayer and requires cooperation between multiplayer players to perform various tasks and escape from the killer, Jason, who is also controlled by one player. Another player controls Tommy Jarvis, a character from the movie that inspired the game, equipped with a shotgun. A key point of multiplayer horror games is that the villain is not controlled by an AI, but by a player, so his moves can be unpredictable and strategic.

#3 Dead by Daylight (PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Stadia - 2016)

Dead by Daylight explores the same idea present in Friday the 13th game, but in a broader way. In the game, characters from several other horror games, movies, and series are available to play, both survivors and killers, each with their own abilities and particularities. Also, we have maps of several other horror works. The chase is intense and the sound of heartbeats becomes chaotic as the killer approaches the four survivors. He tries to hook the survivors on hooks and make it difficult to rescue them. The goal of the game for the survivors is to repair 5 generators and open the map gates in order to escape, while the goal of the killer is to prevent this and kill the 4 survivors by hanging them on hooks. Another difference is that in Friday the 13th game, the survivors have weapons and tools to hurt the killer, while in DBD it is much more about running and repairing, at most, you can stun the enemy, but it is very hard.

#2 The Evil Within II (PS4, Xbox One, PC - 2017)

Released in 2017, The Evil Within 2 utilizes the classic survival horror formula: a vulnerable character, threatening foes, rare resources spread, and the need for investigation.

Sebastian Castellanos, the protagonist, is a detective who has apparently lost everything. When he discovers that his daughter may yet be alive, he runs back into STEM, the doorway to a realistic fantasy world filled with wonders and many terrors.

#1 Resident Evil VII: Biohazard (PS4, PSVR, Xbox One, PC - 2017)

The game takes place in the shoes of Ethan Winters, who is searching for his missing girlfriend. He must deal with a family plagued by bizarre and menacing manners. The atmosphere of the unknown that lives throughout the game makes it quite hard to unravel.

The game pushes you to confront your worries in the most challenging way imaginable, in claustrophobic and scarcely illuminated scenarios, flooded with a fair amount of dreadfulness and suspense, whose excellent visuals help to create the frightening atmosphere.
