While many people focus on the more competitive aspect of Smash Bros. with tier lists and matchup charts, everyone needs to have a little fun sometimes. And of course, that’s the primary purpose of the Smash franchise is to bring together friends so they can tear each other apart. Now, we all still want to beat our friends, so I’ve provided you with a list of The Best Free For All Characters in Smash for 2022. And of course, this list may not be perfect for you, but I guarantee if you’re confused on who to play, you’ll figure it out by the end of the article.

10: Sonic

The Blue Blur is here to run away from everyone and make free for all last 10 extra hours

Sonic is easily an incredibly good free for all character just because of his speed alone. Because of how quick he is you can avoid any and all opponents after you land a couple of hits and then survive long enough to get to the very end and beat the rest. The only problem with him is how light he is and his lack of killpower, but he is still better suited for Free for all than most characters.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Fast
  • Good recovery
  • Quick moves with easy combos
  • Very easy to run away with

9: Samus

With great firepower comes great destructive capability... wait no that's not the line

While Sonic may be quick, Samus is the quintessential projectile powerhouse, mainly due to how easy it is to evade attacks and win interactions with her, which is honestly one of the most powerful tactics in free for alls. Along with her projectiles, all of Samus’ attacks tend to either chain into each other or knock away the opponent far enough to make some space.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Many powerful projectiles
  • Good, fast moves
  • Easy combos
  • Fast options
  • Heavyweight character

8: Ike

This Simple Swordsman gives his all against any amount of opponents

Ike is one of the worst of the best, because he’s just good at anything but projectiles. With a massive sword, incredibly simple combos that work on multiple opponents at once, multiple recovery options and powerful attacks, Ike can fight off just about any foe, or multiple of your foes.

What makes them good for free for all

  • HUGE Sword
  • Fast attacks with easy group combos
  • Semi-projectiles
  • Pretty good recovery
  • Easy to understand and play in a group setting

7: Steve

The not-so-friendly builider uses his special tactics to build his own stage to hide on

Steve is by far the most unique character in all of Smash, requiring entire stages to be rebuilt for him to function properly. Along with this comes one of the best free for all mechanics (that being his building) that allows him to win without even hitting opponents. He also has a good free for all recovery and overall just a wonderful kit for hitting multiple people.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Incredibly fun mechanic, best suited for free for all gameplay
  • Every single move is (technically) disjointed
  • Fairly heavy
  • Powerful/quick attacks depending on material
  • Amazing recovery

6: Ness

While aggravating in 1-on-1 fights, Ness poses even more of an annoyance when your opponent is also being hit by 12 other people

Right about dead center of the list is Ness. While Ness’ moves tend to work best in 1 on 1 duels, using his annoying projectiles, insanely powerful yo-yo tricks and floaty recovery, Ness becomes a complete nuisance in free for all games. However, a fair warning before playing him, you will probably lose half your friends and your father might disappear for the rest of your life.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Many, many annoying projectiles
  • Fast and powerful moves
  • ‘Locking’ attacks such as YoYo and PK Fire
  • Good recovery
  • Easy to run away with

5: Ganondorf

The power of the King of Evil is normally useless, but against a horde of enemies it fits perfectly

If you’re looking for a character who isn’t the greatest solo but is amazing and perfectly satisfying for free for all, Ganondorf is the man (or pig?) to go with. With a huge sword, the best sound effects in the game and by far the hardest hitting spike, Ganondorf is simply incredibly fun to play as no matter how good you do.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Incredibly satisfying and powerful
  • Fun to play as
  • Is the King of Evil
  • Large, disjointed sword attacks

4: Bowser

The semblance of villainy in the main nintendo line of games, Bowser packs just as much of a punch to many enemies as he does to Mario

Bowser is clearly one of the best, just not the best. While he does lack a solid long-distance projectile, he is by far the heaviest, most powerful and most durable character on the roster. You could play a 1v7 and it would still take a solid 3-5 business days to take just one of Bowser’s stocks. This is exactly why he’s perfect for Free for all.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Constant invulnerability (Tough Guy)
  • Powerful attacks
  • Heaviest character in the game
  • Very good landing options

3: Sora

The final Smash character also happens to be one of the best for free for all. Sora simply is a great over-all character, with one of the best recoveries, an easy to understand kit, a 3-in-1 projectile and of course an amazing fanbase. Along with this he has insane gimmicks built into his character that require zero thought, so in a free for all where your focus is very divided there's always button mashing.

What makes them good for free for all

  • One of the best recoveries in the game
  • Many projectiles
  • Fast, powerful attacks
  • Has a counter/reflector that is best suited for free for all

2: King K. Rool

The King is here to pester everyone with invincibility and projectiles

Next up is King K. Rool, a character who almost has it all. Despite relatively slow moves and movement speed, K. Rool makes up for it in sheer power and durability, with a passive invulnerability mechanic on half of his moves, multiple bury options, huge hitboxes and a few amazing projectiles, this crocodile is a force to be reckoned with if you don’t focus on him.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Passive invulnerability
  • Fun mechanics
  • Projectiles
  • Powerful moves
  • Amazing recovery

1: R.O.B.

Image
Body Image

Well, of course a robot would be the best at doing many things at once

By far the most powerful free for all character of them all is R.O.B. I could spend a whole day about why it is simply unfair to play R.O.B. in free for all because it’s just a free win, but alas, you do want to win. Because of how quick his moves are, how versatile his kit is, his amazing recovery, projectiles that phase through people and cause chaos, fighting as R.O.B. is great.

What makes them good for free for all

  • Large, disjointed moves
  • Fast frame data
  • Lots of invulnerability
  • A reflector
  • Projectiles
  • One of the best recoveries in the game
