It’s been just over 5 years since Super Smash Bros Ultimate released, and the hype it’s created shows no signs of stopping. With all the DLC characters added, and tournaments in full swing, it might be time to brush up and revamp those controller settings you’ve been meaning to change. We’ll give you 3 of our favorite controller settings that you can apply to whichever controller you prefer! For consistency, the images included will be of the Nintendo Gamecube Controller.
1. Replace Taunts with Shields
Who needs taunts anyway?
Although it may look a bit weird at first, this setup has a hidden secret. Sometimes in matches against opponents that can bury or freeze you, you’ll have to mash (i.e. spam buttons) to get free and avoid taking even more punishment. With this layout, you can roll around the D-Pad and escape these situations with much more ease than normal; plus, you can get some use from the D-Pad in online play since taunts are disabled anyway!
2. Change the C-Stick input to Tilt Attack
Tilts don’t have to be so hard to pull off
C-Stick is normally set to Smash Attack, which is great when you’re just starting out, but pulling off tilts can be a bit frustrating normally since using the Left Stick and the A button can also be used for smashes. Changing this setting not only gets rid of that roadblock, but also makes comboing easier for most characters and situations.
3. Turn off Stick Jump

The bane of most smash players!
Often overlooked at first, but hard to miss once it happens to you, Stick Jump does exactly what you’d think; you’ll jump when tapping the left stick upwards. This can cause a bunch of issues, from missing tilt attacks, to leaving yourself wide open for punishment. Do yourself a favor and disable it so you never have to worry about it again!
Overall, changing your controller settings, even in small ways, can have a major impact on your gameplay. Don’t let this list limit you either! See what works for you and your characters, and get familiar with what might not. Get in there and win some tourneys!
